Done!

by on Jan.17, 2011, under Corvus Films, La Curandera

for now…

La Curandera is in the can!!!!

The hard work begins.

Now we’ll be submitting to film festivals. Until that all gets settled I will not be posting the film to the internet as of yet. Some festivals require that a film does not screen publicly before premiering at their festival and the internet is, well, about as public as it gets. After we premiere (assuming we do, oh please lawd!) I’ll give a head’s up when the movie goes on youtube, vimeo and yo momma’s blog. It’s frustrating to put all of that work in and then not be able to share the fruits of our labor, but that’s the way it is…

Until then, see you at the Grammy’s!!! Or the Oscar’s or the Golden Turkey’s or whatever it is…

The edit is almost done, the music is coming along and the audio is being cut. We should almost be there.
Here’s a little trailer to hold you over…

Editing

by on Sep.26, 2010, under La Curandera

The picture lock edit is nigh. I have seen the 99% version of the video cut and it looks fantastic! Our editor Dan Johnson has done an excellent job not only cutting the short into a moving picture with emotion, but also wrapping his head around the message and what the script was conveying through the actors.
Now I have the task of completing the music and post audio mix. I’m thinking two weeks may be a little optimistic, but we’ll see where we end up…

Blog

by on Sep.02, 2010, under Corvus Films

I have found that the most difficult part of a blog is in keeping up with the blog… Meaning, I always seem to have something to say (ask my wife), but not enough time to write it all down.
My intention in starting this blog was not only to keep interested parties up to speed on production and development (hi mom and dad!), but also to keep a diary of my experiences for myself and for other would-be writers/directors/producers/musicians.
This past year has taught me a lot about movie making, development and crew wrangling. It began with a simple idea to write a short screenplay about a Sylvia Brown-esque psychic, a faker who doesn’t care about her “craft” any longer and only goes through the motions long enough to separate her mark from their cash, and suddenly I ended up with a full blown production, re-casting roles and running through 3 cinematographers (and boy am I glad we ended up with Ali). It was never my intention to become a “producer,” I just wanted to write and to make music for film, create it the way I saw fit and not to hand it off to some stranger (getting another person to shoot your screenplay is another nightmare unto itself). During production I found joy in the little details that coalesce to form a larger picture. Working with the crew and the meticulous planning I went through with Darrin and Suzette to secure locations, work out kinks in the script, cast actors (I was wholly unprepared for that!), provide food, troubleshoot, budget, re-budget for overruns, schedule, re-schedule the entire production with a weeks notice and on and on gave me some insight not only into the mechanations of producing a short (imagine a feature on a shoe string budget! some people do it though), but also into human nature and how to collaborate and get from people what you want while giving them what they want.
At the time I jumped into developing the full production it seemed like a lark, a bit of fun that would work itself out as we went along. What I ended up with was a lot more time on details, details I never even imagined, and a barely controlled chaos of moving targets.
Still, I wouldn’t change a thing. At any moment it felt like the entire production might fall apart and while negotiating with DP #2 and pushing the shoot back three weeks I almost threw in the towel; needless to say things will be done smarter, not harder, next time.
I remember reading Thrasher magazine when I was in junior high school, I had my walls plastered with skaters from the Powell-Peralta team: Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen and Mike Vallely. Film making, like anything else in life done well, looks easy from afar when applied with skill by other experienced producers and filmmakers. As I learned quickly through bruises and fractures while trying to skateboard (sorry mom), Tony Hawk probably didn’t jump on a board and do a back flip off a half pipe his first time, it took patience and time and practice and likely more than a few broken bones…

How things change

by on Jul.22, 2010, under La Curandera

Just reading back a few posts from over the last month I am struck again by how hilariously quickly things shift and change (not a bad thing, just how life can be).
Due to time commitments with other projects our editor had to bow out and we are now being edited by the more than capable and experienced Daniel Johnson (you might recognize him from one of the videos as our sound recorder). Dan is bringing some serious skills and a passionate eye to the film and after hanging with him for a few days on set I am more than confident and excited that he’s going to deliver a cut that will knock the film out of the park. On a realistic time scale though, we’re looking at having a cut ready in early September (hahahah July?! Yeah right, who needs to sleep?) ;)
Be sure to come back in a month and mock my predictions…

Sifting through the footage

by on Jul.14, 2010, under La Curandera

There are some awesome moments in the film, and some which do not always go according to plan… here’s one of the latter.

Time Lapse

by on Jul.02, 2010, under La Curandera

Not to give too much away ahead of time, but we shot a time lapse last night for the establishing shot in historic Highland Park.  It wasn’t our intention when we showed up to get the Highland Theater in the background, but there it is, a piece of movie history hovering in the background!

Editing is sailing along as I type.

Here’s a still from the time lapse.

On Location – Exterior

by on Jul.01, 2010, under La Curandera

There was an issue with the lighting on the exterior shot, so we had to go back and check out the situation at night.  Here’s a picture of the producer (yours truly) taken by Ali testing the light.

I think the actors will probably be look a little better…

A few behind-the-scenes video sneak peeks

by on Jul.01, 2010, under La Curandera

These were shot by me with a point & shoot Canon Elph, so this is NOT an indication of the quality of the film. This is just a fun behind-the-scenes look at the production. Enjoy!

Edit Time

by on Jun.25, 2010, under La Curandera

So we’re cruising into post production for the edit and I’m happy to say that Mykee, our talented and enthusiastic Grip/Electrical Dept., will be cutting the film for us.  After we get picture lock the audio will get cleaned up and FX will be cut and we’ll lay back the music.  This should put us somewhere in July with a finished film… Hopefully!

Here’s a picture from the set of our director, Darrin (a.k.a. The Burrell).

Done Shooting!

by on Jun.16, 2010, under La Curandera

After 2 looooong days on an extremely hot set (sorry about the lights and covered windows guys!) we wrapped approximately 181 minutes of footage.  Now digging thru the piles of film begins… (well, digital files since we shot this on a Canon 7D)

I’ll have to get a gear breakdown one of these days for anyone interested in how we did this.  The basic setup was a single Canon 7D with a variety of lenses.  Ali mainly used a Fluid Head tripod, but he did some shoulder mount and ball hi hat as well, and he monitored on a really cool Small HD monitor.  The lighting package was fairly comprehensive for such a small space and they used a few Kino Flos, china balls and par cans on speed rail (which was super handy with the lack of floor space!).  Dan the sound man used a Rode boom mic into a Zoom H4N and we recorded at 48k/24 audio.  The video was shot at 1080p/24fps and we’ll be editing video in Final Cut Pro and audio and music in Steinberg’s Cubase 5.

There was an inevitable snafu so we’ll be back out shooting the exterior in a few weeks, but all in all the shoot was wildly successful and we got everything we needed.  Looking forward to seeing this film cut.

Time for drinks and high fives!
